An Experience at Estádio do Maracanã (Rio de Janeiro)
21 March 2007
No trip to Brazil is complete without joining thousands of zealous, chanting, screaming, singing, flag-waving fans urging on their favorite team in the country’s all time favorite past-time, er… rather, obsession. Afterall, no one lives and breathes football like Brazilians do. And no one knows how to cheer on a team like Brazilians do. I mean, even if you don’t like the game, you couldn’t help but enjoy yourself anyway in a setting like this…
After Flamengo scored the one and only goal in the last minutes of the game against Paraná, slight pandemonium broke loose as nearly half of the people whipped off their shirts and circled them in the air above their heads, black and red flags waved around the stadium, and the noise rising from the stands I’m sure could be heard by Rio’s famous statue of Cristo Redentor on top of Corcovado mountain. Although I wasn’t one of those with his shirt waving over his head, I laughed anyway and joined in on the celebration…
My friend Luiz and me
Monday, the time came for me to leave Curitiba and come to Rio. I was so sad to leave; it was truly an unexpectedly amazing time and I could’ve stayed much longer. For a few photos of my time there the last couple weeks, click here: Curitiba photos
