At 10:30am Monday, 16 April 2007, I’m going to race the oldest marathon in America! I’ve trained in five different countries and it’s been a great way to explore the streets of Amsterdam, sweat buckets along the beaches in Brazil, make countless laps on a track in Costa Rica, bundle up against the bitter cold and snow in Minnesota, and race ships along the canal in Panama.
Despite all the traveling, I have managed to get most of my training runs in, ‘though I’ve missed a few key runs and not done enough speed work, but I’m trying hard to let go of any time goals I might have for this marathon, and focus instead on enjoying the race in this historic city and all the events surrounding it. If I meet my time goals too, all the better!
There are only a few things that can compare to the electric energy in the air when thousands of runners gather after months of training to put their bodies to the test of 26.2 miles (42.2km). From the race expo and pre-race carbo load to the after party where everyone gathers at the end of a long but very exciting day to celebrate their accomplishment, the weekend is sure to be a blast!
You can track my progress throughout that day by going to www.bostonmarathon.com and entering my name or bib number: 15047. They will broadcast every 5Km split to this website. The “face” of the Boston Marathon website will change on race day and the process of how to enter the search will be clear.
I’m trained up and ready to go… See you there! I’ll let you know how it goes!
