I can get excited to get on a train to go to another city for the day or to get on an airplane for a new stamp in the passport- that’s easy. But I also still get excited for the little things- like a cup of coffee in the morning or a bike ride across the city with friends. I’ve been thinking a lot about how important it is to remember where I am and who I’m with, and not to take any of it for granted. There’s something to be savored wherever you are, sometimes that thing is obvious, sometimes it takes a bit of thinking and looking.
The other day, my friend Luiz and I went to Delft, the city where the blue and white pottery Holland is known for is made and where Vermeer the painter lived. He painted Girl With a Pearl Earring, made even more famous by a recent movie of the same name. The Vermeer museum was really intriguing; it provided a little window into 17th century Dutch life and I was inspired by his mastery of light.
Delft is a very nice, quaint little town, with a picturesque market square that sets European towns apart. I just love it. It’s so nice just to walk around and be in a place like this. It got its city rights in 1246. Twelve forty-six! Hard to imagine. And of course, no visit is complete without a cup of coffee in one of the many cafés lining the square.
I’m looking forward to my last (for a while, anyways!) European adventure in Belgium this weekend, and I’m looking forward to going home, and spending time with family and friends. That feels good– to be able to enjoy different places for different reasons and to let it all be seamlessly apart of my life.
