Born and bred Seattleites are the biggest wusses I’ve ever seen when it comes to the sun. They honestly shrink back from it like a Madagascar Hissing cockroach scurrying for cover when the light’s turned on for a midnight snack.
They spend all winter long in a suicidal state in the midst of endless gloomy wetness, and when at long last the sun peeks out, the mercury barely pushing 65ºF, they’re all dying of heatstroke and running for cover. They even wear sunglasses indoors. Meanwhile, the weather forecasters are stubbornly sticking to their guns; it’s pure sun with not a cloud in the sky and still they insist on predicting rain in the hours to come, purely out of spite, or simply habit.
What’s up with that?? I’m utterly baffled by the lot of them.
The ones turning out to Green Lake in droves crazed silly like tourists in Amsterdam? Yeah. They’re not from around here.
I, for one, greet the sun as a long lost friend and spend whatever time it chooses to grace me with its presence, basking in its glory and soaking up all the Vitamin D possible.
Therefore, espresso affinity notwithstanding, I hereby disavow myself as a Seattleite, and will try to remain a content foreigner in this strange land until I can call the land of the Brazilian sun my home. Believe me, rain or shine, a day doesn’t go by that I don’t dream of it. It keeps my soul from withering away, despite this dewy city.

Hey! I resent that! :) I just spent a weekend enjoy each ray of sun! The common seattleite just takes awhile, the sun is a scary thing for the the gloomy! I mean jeez on a day like that they can’t even drink their hot soy caramel split double venti sugar free extra whip espresso to get them going in the morning how are they suppose to be chipper!
okay, I might not be a “born and bred” seattlite, but I did live there for over 10 years and still miss it. while living there, however, I definately enjoyed all the sun i could get!!!! so i guess i was never a “true” seattlite either. :)
