Stepping outside of baggage claim in Seattle is always an experience I enjoy– the air is laden with mountain and sea freshness. For me, being back in Seattle always means a refreshing time hanging out with some of my best friends in the world at YWAM Seattle and enjoying the old stomping grounds. There’s always Pike Place market to wander around in, and my favorite restaurant in the whole world, an Indian restaurant in the U-district called Cedars, which is the ultimate in comfort food and amazingness on a plate. I went there three times in one week. :)
I spent the last couple weekends taking a birth doula training course. A do-what?!, you say? Well, a birth doula is someone who offers emotional support, encouragement, and wisdom to a woman and her partner throughout labor and birth. I’ve been fascinated with everything pregnancy since I was little, but since I’m not necessarily interested in the clinical side of things, I never really knew what do to with it.
Then my friend Mel in Seattle, who will officially be a midwife next month (yea, Mel!!!) told me I should think about being a doula. It seemed like a good fit, but I didn’t know when I’d be able to pursue it… until now. I still have yet to see my first birth, but after this training, I’m more convinced that I want to be alongside women as they journey through their own miracle of birth. At one point during the class, I sat back and wondered why I’m so interested in this– it’s messy and unpredictable and life in all it’s rawness. But it’s also incredibly powerful, inspiring, and beautiful. Sometimes you really just can’t explain why you’re interested in something, but you just gotta go with it.
Now it’s time to stop collecting professions and actually start doing them! :) That is, once I pick a place to live, which is a part of the searching for the pearl on this journey ’round the world.
