I’m not one of those people that is on the cutting edge of what’s new and hot in the world. I was never one of the popular kids that everyone wanted to be like. I kinda liked it that way. Who wants all that pressure anyway?! I tend to catch on to things after other people are already over them, or at best, I jump in midstream. Like, I didn’t get one of those slap bracelets everyone was into in the 5th grade until everyone else had already sold theirs at a garage sale over the summer.
I’m not quite sure what it is- if I’m just not paying close enough attention, or if I need things to be proven to me that they’re worth the time and effort. But when I’m in, I’m really in.
I didn’t start watching Friends until there were only a few seasons left, but now I’ve seen every single episode multiple times and I still laugh my head off. Ask me to pick my favorite Friend, and I can’t, cuz I love them all for their own quirky ways. They are my travel-with-me friends; they make me feel at home in foreign places when little else is familiar. I can’t tell you how good it felt to turn the TV on my first morning in Vietnam and there were Rachel, Ross, and Chandler. Silly? Maybe. But I know I’m not the only one (right, Somer, right, Fleur?!?).
For over a year, people have been telling me to watch Grey’s Anatomy, but I was too taken with Lost to listen. There’s only so much energy for obsession in my life. But, in the past two and a half weeks, I’ve watched all 61 episodes. That’s over 43 hours worth of drama, comedy, and quips (Seriously? Seriously.). Phew. Now I can take a break, until Dr. McDreamy and crew kick it all off again with Season Four on September 27th. :)
Can you tell canals and bikes are nothing new to me anymore? Don’t get me wrong- I love them, but the tourists’ allure to them has faded for me. Probably because I don’t really qualify as tourist in this city anymore. I grocery shop, go to friends’ houses for dinner, and generally live day-to-day life here. Tourists don’t do that. It’s kinda nice to not be a tourist for once.
